Cinekid has nominated twelve apps for the Cinekid Lion, an award for the best app from Cinekid AppLab 2016. This year, the prize will for the first time be presented in association with the Fiep Westendorp Foundation, during the Cinekid Festival in the fall break.
The Cinekid Lion rewards the best and most unique apps for children from the past year. With this prize, Cinekid wants to further the quality of apps for young target groups. The apps were selected from Cinekid AppLab: a Dutch-language tool in the form of a free app to search for beautiful, creative, artistic, safe and high-quality apps for children.
The expert jury, consisting of Gioia Smid, Juliet Tzabar and David Kleeman, will select a winner from the twelve nominees. They evaluate quality, innovation and authenticity, with artwork, user-friendliness, interactive design, sound and storyline as the key criteria.
The nominations for the Cinekid Lion AppLab Award 2016 are:
- DNA Play, Avokiddo (Cyprus)
- Duckie Deck Homemade Orchestra, Duckie Deck Development (Poland)
- Een Verre Reis, YipYip (Netherlands)

With 1200 m2, the MediaLab is the largest interactive digital playground in Europe. Here you will find the latest games, interactive installations and media workshops.
Cinekid will announce the winner during the awards ceremony on Friday 21 October 2016. The winner receives the Cinekid Lion AppLab Award 2016 and a € 2000 cash prize.
Every day, hundreds of apps in all shapes and sizes are added. Parents, teachers and other educators want the best for children, but how can you find it in this cornucopia? To this end, the Cinekid AppLab was developed, a selection of apps that Cinekid has independently assessed and recommended, as a tool to search for beautiful, creative, artistic, safe and high-quality apps for children.
About Fiep Westendorp
On 17 December 2016, it is 100 years ago that Fiep Westendorp was born. The illustrator’s work is still alive and kicking. For many generations, her drawings have a special place in the hearts of both young and old. Fiep Westendorp left the rights to her work in the hands of the Fiep Westendorp Foundation. This foundation supports and initiates projects to stimulate children's creativity.
With the prize the Fiep Westendorp Foundation wants to increase the quality of (new) media for children.
Since June, the brightly decorated double-decker Fiep Bus traverses the Netherlands to commemorate her birthday. Aboard, you can experience some great activities and play all sorts of games, including a selection of the apps from Cinekid AppLab.
