Yet again, it is time to introduce you to a member of our wonderful staff. Please meet our Hospitality Producer, Matthijs van der Veer.
Matthijs, please introduce yourself and tell us a little about your background.
A little more than two years ago, I got my master’s in Film Studies, following a bachelor’s in Media and Culture. Since then, I’ve been active in the film industry in various capacities, from working at festivals, to writing criticism, providing screenplay advice and functioning as a jury member at the Venice Days. During last year’s Cinekid, I helmed the Cinekid ScreeningClub, but this year I’ll be concerned with various parts of the programme. During the festival, you’ll be able to find me at the Guest Desk on most days.
Which media productions bring out the child in you?
I can keep coming back to the VHS tapes I kept rewinding as a child, like Ghostbusters, Star Wars and The Lion King, but I’m also happy to gobble up everything Ghibli and Pixar. And even though its subject matter is not necessarily child-oriented, there’s nothing that has recently made me as childishly giddy as Damien Chazelle’s La La Land.
What are you most looking forward to during the festival?
The best thing about a festival is always the moment at which all the elements of the gradual build-up culminate in a couple of intense days populated by immensely creative people who are passionate about the field they’re working in. I look forward to meeting as many of these individuals as possible and help them make the most of the festival!
