And: Selection Best Children’s Film Competition announced!
We're happy to share that our 33rd Cinekid Festival will open with the Dutch premiere of BINTI on Wednesday 16 October. This Flemish-Dutch co-production by Bulletproof Cupid and Family Affair Films is he feature debut ofthe award-winning short film director Frederike Migom. Cinekid is hosting the premiere in partnership with film distributor In The Air. Femke Halsema, mayor of Amsterdam, will be among the special guests.
In the cheerful adventure film BINTI, the young and energetic vlogger Binti, who is residing illegally in Belgium with her father who fled Congo, must go into hiding with the eleven-year-old nature enthusiast Elias and his mother. Binti has a marvellous plan: if her father marries Elias’s single mother, then they can stay in Belgium for good. But then there is the jealous neighbour to deal with.
From scenario to co-production
Cinekid has been involved with BINTI since the start of the film project. Migom developed the scenario during her participation in the Cinekid Script LAB, and the collaboration between Bulletproof Cupid and Family Affair Films to produce the film arose during the festival’s Junior Co-production Market.
‘Cinekid feels a bit like a home-coming. Part of the film was developed here, and my previous film also had its Dutch premiere here. The honour of being the festival’s opening film really feels like a wonderful gift.’ – Frederike Migom, director of BINTI
‘BINTI is a wonderful film that helps children of all ages understand the difficult situation of refugees, in a positive manner. The theme of Cinekid 2019 is ‘Hello World’. Our goal is to devote more attention to children’s power of imagination, all around the world. Their personal stories deserve to be heard. We could not wish for a better ambassador of this message than the energetic young vlogger Binti!’ – Erik Tijman, Head of Film & Television Cinekid
Frederike Migom and the main actors Bebel Tshiani Baloji and Mo Bakker will attend the festive opening, along with the Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema.
