In the Year of the Scenario the first working seminar on scenario writing will be held at Cinekid. The aim is to write a scenario based on a children's book. This will take place in a closed session during the morning. In the afternoon the results will be presented and discussed in an open forum.
The morning programme
A story for children will be turned into a synopsis for a film by four teams of eight scenario writers. The teams will be led by Maarten Almekinders and Eveline Verwoerd (they are both dramatist and scenario writer, and founders of Scriptdesk), Robert Wolfe (writer of books for children) and Daan Gielis (Head of Talent, Binger Filmlab). Participants have to read the selected book in advance. Over the course of two hours the foundations will be laid for a synopsis.
The afternoon programme
The results of the morning session will be presented the same afternoon. This will be followed by a discussion about the differences between the synopsises involving the writers, a panel of scenario writers and an audience. During the discussion, questions will be addressed such as: what kind of creative choices have to be made when turning a book into a film? How do these choices influence the meaning of the story? In what ways can the authenticity of the story's original author clash with that of the scenario writer?
The panel, featuring Tamara Bos, Ted van Lieshout and Paul Jan Nelissen, illustrates its vision of the synopsises with case studies and film fragments taken from their own rich experience and oeuvres.
