Nature film African Bambi in première at Cinekid

Press release, 25 September 2007, Amsterdam

On Sunday 14 October African Bambi will receive its première at Cinekid. The first nature film specifically made for children, African Bambi is a 35 mm wildlife feature film shot in its entirety in Tanzania. Cinekid is proud to provide the first forum for the film, that is especially notable for the superior quality of its footage. It is for the first time that a nature film of such high quality has been made specifically for children. Loes Luca can be heard as the voice of mother Giraffe.

The camera work in African Bambi is by Anton van Munster, who for many years was the right-hand man and regular cameraman for Bert Haanstra. In part due to his work with Haanstra, Van Munster is one of the pillars of the Dutch documentary tradition. Alan Miller, African Bambi's director, contributed to films that have included The Serengeti Symphony, the Cheetah Family, and Return to the Wild, which last August won the ROSCAR Award for Best Environmental and Conservation/Campaign Production at the Durban Wild Talk Africa Festival. Nature Conservation Films also produced the first 35 mm wildlife feature, The Leopard Son.

African Bambi is also unique in that it remains true to the story of the original Bambi animation film. In this exciting first nature film for children - Bambi ‘for real', the story is told by Mother Giraffe (Loes Luca), who uses her long neck to oversee everything that happens. Three young gazelles are born in Tanzania, and before reaching adulthood they have to survive all kinds of dangers: forest fires, hunters and, of course, other wild animals. Seen through the eyes of the gazelle's, the audience gets to meet all the other animals of the plain.
